If there is no religion

14 Nov

In 1970s, John Lennon sang: “Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try. No hell below us. Above us only sky. Imagine all the people. Living for today…”

I share his sentiments. Sometimes I desperately wish that there is no religion in this world so that we have one less differences. We gave enough of them: different skin colour, different language, different education, different wealth, different age, different taste of music. Of all differences, religious difference is the hardest one to bridge because it’s, in my opinion, highly emotional and irrational. The belief in God, which supposes to make us better people, ends up dividing us and creating resentment toward each other. I thought, “Why don’t everyone just live with their conscience ccimg9230-5.JPGlear?”

But, I read in a book, Truth, written by Simon Blackburn stating something like this: “The problem is when someone don’t believe in God, he ends up believe in everything.” I think he may be right – some people even believe UFO is coming to save them – and it may be more dangerous.

Also, religions bring happiness and peacefulness to their followers. Many friends told me that they believe God saves, protects and forgives them. They become better and kinder to serve their god. I think it’s quite a good way of encouraging goodness and morality – even though sometimes it ends up with hypocrisy.

But on the other side, there are some people who are so caught up with the idea of ‘mine is the only truth’ and determine to spread the perceived truth to others. I think it’s difficult to prove the existence of God because it involves personal ‘religious’ experience. Plus, why does it matter whether God exists or not, or which God is the right god; the earth still rotates and the sun still shines (well, even though not so much of it at this part of the world).

Perhaps by keeping the religion as a private relationship and not imposing it to others, we can achieve world peace. Afterall, if God does exist and if he is so good, he won’t want to see his people suffer.

    The Smashing Pumpkins
If There Is a God (piano/vox) Lyrics

    If there is a God
I know he likes to rock
    He likes his loud guitars
    And his spiders from Mars
And if there is a God
    I know he’s watching me
He likes what he sees, but there’s trouble on the reefs
    Who are you this time?
Are you one of us flying blind?
Because I’m down here throwing stones
While you’re so far from home
And if there is a God, if there is a God
He’s a spy with bedroom eyes
    Who cowers in our skies
    Who are you, this time?
Are you one of us flying blind?
Because we’re down here throwing stones
While you’re so far from home
    If there is a God.
    If there is a God.

    haha…I totally agree with you.
Can I just believe in myself? Hope that does not sound unwise.
Sometimes human beings are so confused by themselves that they need someone like God to tell them what to do, namely to save them from the rotated world.
